Kedarnath is one part of the Chota Dham and is located in Rudraprayag district of the Indian state- Uttarakhand. Located in the Himalayas about 3600 meters above sea level near Chorabari Glacier which is head of Madakini River.

The Kedarnath temple opens on Akshaya Tritha (April end or May 1st week) and closes on Bhai Dhuj (October End or 1st week of November) due to heavy snowfall and extreme cold weather.

Kedarnath is accessible only by trek/pony/dolly, by foot the distance is 14km steep trek from Gaurikund the nearest road head.

Kedarnath is named in honor of King Kedar, who ruled in the Satya Yuga. He had a daughter named Vrinda who was a partial incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi. She performed austerities for 60000 years. In honor of her, the land is named Vrindavan. However, Kedarnath and its temple exist from the Mahabharata Era when the Pandavas were supposed to have pleased Lord Shiva by conducting penance there.



How To Reach

By Flight: Jolly grant is the nearest airport for Kedarnath which is 238 kms from Gaurikund the nearest road head from there one has to trek for 14 kms.

By Rail: The nearest railway station is Rishikesh which lies at a distance of 216 kms. The major Railway station is Haridwar which is just 26 kms away.

By Road: Gaurikind is the road head for Kedarnath from there one has to trek for 14 kms. There are Palki, Dolly, Pithu, Pony, Horse are available at a fixed price which is set by union.
