Buddhist Pilgrimage Tour

This 10-day Buddhist pilgrimage tour takes you through some of the most sacred and revered sites in Buddhism, offering a journey through the life and teachings of Lord Buddha. From the enlightenment site at Bodhgaya to the birthplace at Lumbini and other important landmarks in India and Nepal, this tour provides a deep spiritual experience coupled with historical and cultural insights.

Upon arrival at Gaya Airport, you will be transferred to Bodhgaya, one of the most important pilgrimage destinations for Buddhists worldwide. After settling in, the rest of the day is free for leisure, allowing you to explore the town or simply relax in preparation for your spiritual journey ahead.

Spend the day exploring the sacred sites of Bodhgaya. Visit the revered Mahabodhi Temple, where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree. Explore other nearby temples and monasteries built by Buddhist communities from around the world, each reflecting its unique cultural style. The serene environment of Bodhgaya offers a perfect setting for meditation and reflection.

Today, embark on an excursion to Nalanda, the site of one of the oldest universities in the world, which was once a renowned center of learning for Buddhist philosophy. Afterward, visit Rajgir, a place where Buddha spent several months meditating and giving sermons. Return to Bodhgaya in the evening for an overnight stay.

After breakfast, drive to Varanasi, one of the holiest cities in India, revered in both Hinduism and Buddhism. Upon arrival, you’ll have time to relax before experiencing the spiritual atmosphere of Varanasi, including the famous Ganga Aarti at the ghats by the Ganges River.

Begin the day with a sunrise boat ride on the Ganges, where you can observe pilgrims performing their morning rituals on the ghats, while soaking in the spiritual ambiance. After breakfast, head to Sarnath, where Lord Buddha gave his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. Explore the archaeological ruins, stupas, and the Sarnath Museum. Return to the city and visit important temples like the Durga Temple and Tulsi Manas Temple, walk around the narrow lanes of the old city. Spend the evening exploring the city’s vibrant street markets before returning to your hotel.

Today, drive to Kushinagar (approx..300kms / approx..8hrs), the place where Lord Buddha attained Mahaparinirvana (final enlightenment or death). Upon arrival, visit the Mahaparinirvana Temple, the reclining Buddha statue, and other significant sites. Kushinagar is a quiet and peaceful town, making it a perfect place for contemplation and spiritual immersion.

After breakfast, drive to Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, located in Nepal. Lumbini is a UNESCO World Heritage site and holds immense significance for Buddhists around the world. Upon arrival, visit the sacred Maya Devi Temple, marking the exact spot where Buddha was born. Spend the evening reflecting on the serenity of this deeply spiritual place.

Spend the day exploring Lumbini and its surrounding monasteries and monuments. Visit the Ashoka Pillar, built by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BCE, and various temples constructed by Buddhist communities from different countries, each offering its unique architectural and spiritual perspective. The tranquil atmosphere of Lumbini allows for meditation and personal reflection.

After breakfast, drive to Shravasti (approx…15kms – 5hrs), another significant Buddhist site where Buddha is said to have performed several miracles. Explore the ancient ruins, monasteries, and the Jetavana Monastery, where Buddha spent many of his monastic years. Shravasti is a peaceful town, ideal for connecting with the teachings of Buddha.

On the final day, after breakfast, drive to Gorakhpur (approx. 120kms – 4hrs) for your onward journey. Depending on your flight or train schedule, you may have some free time to explore Gorakhpur before departing, bringing your transformative Buddhist pilgrimage to a close.
